Have you ever seen anything cuter than a dog or cat wearing a shirt, a bow tie, hair ornaments or a funny costume? No doubt, they make awesome photo ops and viral social media posts. But what if your pet doesn’t like all the fanfare? Do you force the matter or wait it out until they’ve had an opportunity to get used to the idea first. Here are three tips to help you manage the situation.
It’s best to introduce clothing to your pet gradually until they get used to them. Start by putting them on for just a few minutes at a time. Increase the time intervals little by little. If wearing clothing proves to be too stressful, accept that it may not be the best thing for your pet.
Breeds with thick hair do not need to wear clothing as it can cause them to overheat. Also be mindful that on walks, their body temperature rises naturally so pay attention to their breathing pattern. Look for signs like panting that could indicate overheating. Remove the clothing immediately if that occurs.
Before you add clothing to your pet’s routine, you should check with your vet first for guidance.
